For the purpose of - hei

For the purpose of, as, as a means of, for the purpose of doing something.

Hei must be followed by a transitive verb, and can't be followed by an intransitive verb or a passive verb. (You can't say hei noho or hei tirohia.)

Can can be followed by a verb (in order to do something) or a noun (as something).

Āe, he keke pea hei whakanui i te taenga mai o Kauri.
Yes, perhaps a cake to celebrate the arrival of Kauri.

Ko te Rāhoroi te pai hei haerenga ki Pōneke.
Saturday is the best day for going to Wellington.

Hei aha ngā taonga hangarua ? Hei hanga taonga toi.
What are those recycled goods for? For making artworks.

Hei aha tēnā tuaina? Hei here i aku pīni.
What's that twine for? For tying my beans up.

Ke kohi i te hua o te miro, hei hinu whakakakara.
