Ordinal numbers (First, second, third...) - tuatahi, tuarua...

Ordinal numbers

Ordinal numbers are words like first, second, third, etc

There are two ways to form the ordinal numbers - firstly, with tua- as a prefix.

  1. tuatahi - first
  2. tuarua - second
  3. tuatoru - third
  4. tuawhā - fourth
  5. tuarima - fifth
  6. tuaono - sixth
  7. tuawhitu - seventh
  8. tuawaru - either
  9. tuaiwa - ninth
  10. tekau (or te tekau when definite)

The second way is the te ... o construction (meaning "the ... of")

  1. te tuatahi o - the first of...
  2. te rua o - the second of...
  3. te toru o - the third of...
  4. te whā o - the fourth of...
  5. te rima o - the fifth of...
  6. te ono o - the sixth of...
  7. te whitu o - the seventh of...
  8. te waru o - the eighth of...
  9. te iwa o - the ninth of...
  10. te tekau o - the tenth of...
