The reason why something will happen - mā... e... ai

Mā... can be used to give the reason for something happening. When used with e... ai it refers to the past:

māku - I will be the reason
māu - you will bethe reason
māna - he.she will bethe reason

mā tāua - you and I will bethe reason
mā māua - the two of us (not you) will be the reason
mā kōrua  -  you two will be the reason
mā rāua  -  those two (they two) will be the reason

mā tātou  -  all of us (including you) will be the reason
mā mātou  -  all of us (not you) will be the reason
mā koutou  -  you all will be the reason
mā rātou  -  they (all of them) will bethe reason

mā Rangi - Rangi will bethe reason
mā Rangi rāua ko Mere - Rangi and Mere will bethe reason
mā te kaiako - the teacher will be the reason
mā ngā tamariki -  the children will be the reason

Following the subject of the sentence is the object (without i). In the future, e and ai preceed and follow the verb:

Māku te māmā  i harikoa ai.
I is the reason the mother will be happy.

te kaiako ngā tauira e hoha ai.
The teacher is the reason that the students will be bored.

koutou ahau e pōhara ai.
You are the reason that I will be broke.

Mere a Hemi e oho ai.
Mere is the reason Hemi will wake up.

Note the difference between past, present and future:

Nā te ua ngā tamariki i māku ai.
The rain was the reason the children got wet.

Nā te ua ngā tamariki e māku ai.
The rain is the reason the children are getting wet.

Mā te ua ngā tamariki e māku ai.
The rain is the reason the children will get wet.
